On November 10th, 2019, Slippery Rock University held a Self-Care Sunday event for its students to participate in from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the Smith Student Center ballroom. At the event, students were able to relax with various self-care activities such as arts & craft stations like painting and positive message flower making (where students could write positive messages on cardboard paper leaves and make them into a flower). The event also featured DIY face mask stations and bath salts stations, etc. A small variety of cookies and punch table was set up as well. Three different emotional support service dogs were present right outside of the main doors at the event as well for students to pet and play with for stress relief. There weree free items available for students such as “consent is mandatory” bracelets, and cups from “The Grove”, a nearby student housing apartment complex. Mental health awareness education stations were set up at the event for students to learn methods to combat stressful situations and coping mechanisms on how to deal with them. Many students attended the event and were able to relieve stress, get educated on mental health awareness, and socialize with other Slippery Rock University students. Colin Cain, a sophomore business finance student at Slippery Rock University stated that he was “able to learn different methods to help relieve stress at the event.” Overall, the event was a huge success for Slippery Rock University students to participate in and help relieve some stress and anxiety for a few hours as well learn some educational factors when dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression. The event was really focused on overall spreading on positivity and self-love for students to forget the stresses of school work from the semester with it coming to a close in December.
